Tourists double to Patan in Kathmandu Valley
Tourists visiting Patan Durbar Square, one of the 7 UNESCO designated world Heritage Sites in Kathmandu Valley, has doubled in 2004 over the year before.
Statistics from the City revealed 117,542 tourists shared the splendor of this medieval city, full of traditional architecture and art including world famous bronze carvings.
Famous monuments include the Royal Palace of the Malla Kings, and the Krishna Mandir (Temple of Lord Krishna).
Messner to attend Cho Oyu Golden Jubilee Celebration
One of the world's most renowned climbers, Reinhold Messner, arrived in Kathmandu last Monday to attend the 50th anniversary of Mt. Cho-Oyu (8,210m) being held on 19 Oct. About 20 miles west of Mt Everest, sitting astride the Nepal-Tibet border, it is the 6th highest mountain in the world. Cho Oyu is translated in Tibetan as "the goddess of the turquoise." More than 35 foreign delegates are expected to participate including
Reinhold Messner, one of the most famous climbers in the world arrived in Kathmandu on last Monday to attend the 50th anniversary of Mount Cho-Oyu (8210 m) on October 19, 2004.
Above 35 foreign delegates including Peter Habler and Dr. Heuberg Helmut, who were with S. Joechler, H. Tichy and P. Dawa, the first climbers of Cho-Oyu on October 19, 1954, are participating in the Golden Jubilee Celebration.
The celebration is going to be organized being inspired by the grand success of Mount Everest Golden Jubilee in May 2003.
The mega event is designed to celebrate one of the greatest successes of humankind by setting footprint on the world's sixth highest peak on the planet. This historic event will further signify the glory of the peak and fetch in positive publicity not only about Nepal as a most happening destination but also as a pioneer player in the arena of mountain sports and adventure activities. Himalayan Film Festivals are also being organized to commemorate this anniversary.
BARN has new executive
The Annual General Meeting of Board of Airlines Representatives in Nepal (BARN) held on September 24, 2004 formed an eleven member executive committee.
The meeting reelected Mr. Raju Bahadur KC as the Chairman of the Board while Mohmad Zainal and K. Sundar Shrestha were elected as the Vice Chairman and the Hon. Secretary General of the Board respectively.
