Nepal’s Situation Update
Dear Partners,
A meeting of the Standing Committee of the Unified Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (UCPN-M) on Sunday (May 9, 2010) decided to stop all its protests against the government until May 24.
The party’s spokesperson Dina Nath Sharma said that his party will resume agitations from May 25 if Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal does not resign.
After the UCPN-M called off its indefinite nationwide strike on May 7, Nepal’s situation has returned to normalcy. There is smooth movement of tourists and their vehicles in the Kathmandu Valley as well as other parts of the country. As usual, all the factories, industries, other business enterprises and academic institutions are now in operation.
Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal and other top leaders of the ruling political parties have taken the initiatives to hold talks with the UCPN-M in order to address the present political deadlock. We, therefore, are optimistic that the political leaders will reach an understanding to settle the problem soon.
